More Thoughts on the Billups-Iverson Trade

Hey guys.
It's been a few days since the trade went down and since both Billups and Iverson will be making their debuts for their new teams tonight it seems like a good team to give you some final thoughts on the trade.

I still don't understand Denver's side of it completely. I mean I understand their new for a true PG and the sentiment of bring a hometown hero like Billups back home, but I don't get it financially. All you have to do it look at Denver's payroll in 2010-2011 when it will be about $55 million dollars for just four players. The luxury tax for this season is about $71 million dollars. So the Nuggets, who supposedly wanted to cost custs by giving away Camby, bring in a long term contract in Billups. In two year Denver will only be about $15 million under the luxury tax but for just four players. NBA teams require at least twelve players on a team. The math isn't hard to do: Denver will be over the luxury tax for the next two seasons at least. All to bring back Billups. Now understand that Billups is one of my favorite players, but I don't think that he makes them any better than a first or maybe second round playoff loser. Denver is saying one thing and doing another, it's as simple as that.

Iverson is saying all right things in Detroit so far. He has spoke about sacrificing his game in order to make the team better and so on and so forth. If he can be anything like a former MVP who was missing a championship ring last year (Kevin Garnett), then he might be the piece that puts the Pistons over the top.

I will never get used to seeing Billups wear that #7 Nuggets jersey.

The whole McDyess situation is interesting. Will he be bought out by Denver? For the full amount? Does he go back to the Pistons? Or maybe to some other team? It'll be very interesting to see where this extremely productive role player ends up.

Tonight's debuts will hopefully provide a clue as to whether or not this was a good trade and for which teams.

Another thing I think is weird is AI with a any jersey on but a 76ers jersey.

Yeah that might be true too, although A.I. has worn 3 different jerseys in less than 2 years now.

Billups on the other hand is wearing a different jersey for the first time in over 6 years.

The Boston game will be something else, but I'm getting antsy at a lot of fans who might overreact if we go 0-2 in the iverson era.

Chill. Nothing is lost in November. Unless your the Kings or Clips.

Yeah, I believe today's game will be a nice preview of what the Pistons will look like come May. However I wouldn't take too much from it, as this is only A.I.'s second game. Not to mention that the Pistons will be without McDyess (assuming he resigns) for a month. But it will still be a great game and I'm looking forward to watching it.

I know that as a Pistons fan I'm not too concerned with the regular season anymore. The past three years the Pistons have won an average of 58 games and have yet to make the NBA Finals. So I know that I'd be willing to sacrifice a few more W's in November for a better shot at the title come June.
