The Marbury Soap Opera

Hey guys.
I’m sorry for not being able to write as much as I would like, but that’s the life of a student.

Anyways, on to business….
So I’m sure many of you are aware of the Stephon Marbury situation.
Stephon Marbury: NBA Career - New York Knicks

So basically Marbury publicly feuded with Coach Isiah Thomas and his teammates all last year while only playing in 24 games. So this year the Knicks have a new coach, president, and system in which would probably suit Marbury quite well. However, the Knicks have no plans to play Marbury unless injuries to their other guards occur. But New York refuses to waive, trade, or buy out Marbury, who is in the last year of his contract. He’s on the books this year for $21,937,500.

Here’s my take on this.
Why would you keep this guy around? Honestly, why not just waive him? This is NEW YORK. This is the team that’s known for having extremely high payrolls but being able to win only 20 some games a year. He is a cancer to the Knicks, it’s that simple. This isn’t a small market team like Memphis that can’t afford to give a guy $22 million to go away. But the Knicks can. If they don’t want to play Marbury, then either trade him or buy him out.

A trade would be more ideal, but seriously, who’s going to want him? Teams aren’t desperate enough to trade for Indiana’s Jamaal Tinsley, they’re not going to try to get Marbury who’s making three times as much money. The only scenario that would make sense is for a rebuilding team to try to acquire Marbury for his expiring contract. That team would do that because after this season when Marbury’s contract comes off the books it will allow that team to get under the salary cap and make a run at the 2009 and 2010 free agents.

The bottom line is that this Marbury situation is getting more attention this season than the Knicks are, which is too bad, since New York is actually doing well at the moment (4-2). New York needs to buy him out. Now.

Hey Steve, nice blog you've got going here. I post on Pistonscast, also -- first time commenting here at your blog.

I have to agree with you on the Marbury situation. Why are the Knicks paying a guy 20 million to just sit there? That's 20 million in cap space used up by a guy who's doing nothing!

If they want to punish him, it's understandable -- but in the long run, this seems to be hurting the team, and they're punishing themselves.

Hey thanks!
Yeah I just don’t get what New York is hoping to accomplish. This is a bit like the situation in Indiana with Tinsley, although he was told to just go home to his home in Atlanta, not ride the bench like Marbury.

But at least Indiana isn’t creating a huge distraction like it is with New York.
